My Research Question- How does Uneven Public School Funding and School Districts inability to retain Qualified teachers Complicate American Education? And What are some Solutions to these Problems?

Journalistic Source

Raikes, Jeff, and Linda D Hammond. “Why Our Education Funding Systems Are Derailing the American Dream.” Learning Policy Institute, 13 July 2022, https://learningpolicyinstitute.org/blog/why-our-education-funding-systems-are-derailing-american-dream.

The authors are asking How does The current Public-School Funding system Hurt students and complicate American Education? There answer is that due to the nature of the way schools are funded (Through property taxes from the students' parents house), it is extremely complicated to get even funding as lower valued areas will always get the short end of the stick. They also explain that students are indeed negatively impacted by uneven funding. Their evidence includes studies from Illinois showing disparities in inner city funding with the suburbs and several surveys. The authors would argue with anyone that says Uneven Public school Funding does not have a negative effect on American Education.

Reading this article taught me more about why giving even funding to all public schools in all areas is so complicated in America, one of the reasons is that unless you can you can make lower income areas property values higher the only way to even it  out is with government help. The article states “Grow up in a rich neighborhood with a large property tax base? You get well-funded public schools. Grow up in a poor neighborhood? The opposite is true.”. This shows me that this is a complicated issue to fix because unless you overhaul the entire funding system nothing can be done to stop rich kids getting a huge advantage, and with politicians in government complicating federal funding even more that relief may never come. In my own experience going to 2 wildly different high schools ; one in a low income area in Columbus and the other one a defiantly more upper-class school, I saw the disparities first hand weather it be quality of teachers or technology in the school. My own solution to the problem would be similar to one this article touches on which is funding Kindergarten and Pre-K education first moving up so that the achievement gap can be closed up early on and hopefully results can be seen down the line.
